THE WINDS OF TIME
(©1990, Dudley-Brian Smith)
It’s a hard time for those left behind
It’s a dim light that doesn’t quite shine
But we’re holding out with one accord
For a better time and the day of the sword.
And so it goes, and so it goes
You may never know,
Where the winds of time may blow.
Fists are shaking into the sky
Such confusion – will it ever be right?
We keep the faith and finish the course
We keep faith alive when we face the worst.
And so it goes, and so it goes
You may never know,
Where the winds of time may blow.
There’s a promise of coming light
There’s a sign in the darkest night
Hold on, hold fast, and believe
There’s a pattern to the rage of the winds of time
YEARNING
(©2001, Jan Smith)
Oh, a star fell tonight in the cold winter sky
And it went down like a diamond just shining, shining,
And the moon in the mist, in the grey smoky mist
Like a ghost from the past it is hiding, hiding
See the croft down below in the wind and the snow
How the candle in the window is burning, burning
And I sit on this hill, waiting silent and still
With my heart and my memory yearning
Long ago heather bloomed, and its gentle perfume
Filled my senses and started me singing, singing
Heart to heart, hand in hand, with my jo’ and my bairn
In the air we heard the kirking bells ringing, ringing.
Oh, my heart it was young, and my future was strong
And in life and in love I was winning, winning
But my jo, and my babe like the mist had to fade
How I wish it were just now beginning, beginning.
Like an hourglass trickling down
Time passes by with no sound
And nothing can set a man free
From echoes of his memory
I can still see the place of our last warm embrace
O, it fills up my mind when I’m dreaming, dreaming.
Then, I wake up alone with my heart like a stone
And I wonder just how it keeps beating.
A SINGLE DAY
(©2003, Dudley-Brian Smith)
When the sun is in the east and the shadows are long,
I love to go a rovin’ and hear the morning song.
There is music in the hedgerow and laughter in the glen.
There is life away from the lives of men.
I have seen the eagle; I have seen the hawk;
And felt their gaze upon me when in the forest I walk.
What can they teach me? What would they say
If I could live among them, even for a single day?
Here there’s a seamless peace and great majesty
In the beauty of the air that the mockingbird sings.
If I could sing so pure, if I could sing so free,
I would spread the joy of being to everything.
I have seen the eagle, I have seen the hawk;
I can feel the balance and the tick of the clock.
We must be careful, it’s all so frail.
It can all be lost, even in a single day.
It can all be lost, it can all go away. No matter the cost, save every single day.
I’LL BE IN YOUR DREAMS
(©1987, Jan Smith)
When the moon is full,
And the mist moves in…
I’ll be in your dreams.
Jewel of your mind.
Diamond in the night.
When the tide is high,
And the white owl cries
Find me in your mind.
As the night wind sings
To lovers in their dreams.
MARCH OF TIME

IN YOUR FIRE
(©2002, Dudley-Brian Smith)
When there is darkness falling down
I must travel toward the light
Whenever fears and doubts abound
There is hope in the darkest night
We are never alone, we are cradled in hope
All I need is the warmth of your fire to keep me from the cold
All I need is your gentle touch when I feel all alone
There are better days, I know.
There is strength when I am low.
All I need is the warmth of your fire to save me from the cold
When I am feeling insecure
I go where I know is strength
When I feel fragile and unsure
I must persevere at length
I am never alone, just my humanity shown
In your fire, I am refined. In your fire, I am purified .
I am strengthened and reforged in your fire!
TIME, THE MIGHTY HERO
(©1988, Jan Smith)
For their dirty little kingdom they gunned the peasants down
They took the maids and mothers and fashioned quite a crown.
And they called themselves a nation and defied the prophecies
As they reveled in the tarnish of their tainted kings and queens.
And the homeless built their houses and the hungry worked their land
While they danced in crumbling circles in their monuments of sand.
And the ocean beats the mountain - And the eagle mounts the sun
And the warriors and their weapons wonder who has won.
But Time, the mighty hero, had a sword they could not see
In a scabbard made of justice and a hilt of liberty.
And he chiseled at the kingdom and washed it out to sea
So that not one fact was left of their jaded majesty.
For they conquered all the kingdoms
And they guarded all the gates,
But Time, the mighty hero,
Slipped in and sealed their fate.
And the ocean beats the mountain - And the eagle mounts the sun
And the warriors and their weapons - Wonder who has won.
And the warriors and their weapons – wonder who has won.
PERSEVERANCE

TWICE AROUND THE WORLD
(©1977, Dudley-Brian Smith)
I am a sailor; I’ve lived upon the sea.
It’s always moving, but that’s just right for me.
I’ve seen so many things that turned my heart to stone.
I left my only love upon a distant shore.
Now I find myself wishing to return,
But I have lost my way – by now, you’d think I’d learned.
I’ll never find the way, and I can only say
I’ve been twice around the world.
(Running fast, running free – same with you, same with me.)
I’ll go slowly, making sure I know my course.
I never tie down too long at any port.
Oh-ho! I am a sailor, but now I know I’m lost
And drifting out to see I look for the light of the coast.
Now I find myself wishing to return,
But I have lost my way – by now, you’d think I’d learned.
I’ll never find the way, and I can only say
I’ve been twice around the world.
TEN YEARS AGO
(©1987, Jan Smith,)
Ten years ago somewhere in France,
You were the boy who loved to dance
I showed you off like a trophy from the fair
So easily you conquered earth and air
We’d smoke our cigarettes with such a flare
We had our fortunes told and mocked the cards
And swirled around the statues in the park
Remember how we scaled the silver wall
Just you and me in freedom’s fearless call
We’d laugh as in the arms of fate we’d fall
But back at school the rules were there to break
And lovers’ hearts were there for all to take
The cycles of time were on the run
They’ve got their course, they don’t stop for anyone
And soon the letters didn’t go or come
Truly we were the best of friends
And what we started then, it has no end
But sometimes when the wind begins to blow
The autumn leaves in circles ‘round my door
I think about a boy who loved to dance
And I’m 10 years ago somewhere in France.
JERUSALEM

Jerusalem.....Jerusalem…Shalom!
BURNING DESIRE
(©1988, Dudley-Brian Smith)
This day is fair, but the next may be cold;
Leaves spinning ‘round in a ballet of gold.
Your heart is true, but mine is changing;
I’ve got a burning desire to be on my own.
I’ve a burning desire deep in my soul.
I’ve a burning desire to dance before I’m too old.
Leaving this land has always been fine;
But losing your love has kept me in line.
What if I leave and end up alone?
It’s a question that’s left me chilled to the bone.
My arms grow weary and my legs grow thin
But my heart hears a tune that stirs in the wind
COMPANY
(©2004, Jan & Dudley-Brian Smith)
After the rain and the snow and dark
Comes company, ah, company.
Sing and feast and share a lark. Company are we.
CHORUS: In our hearts deep down we know
Brethren all on this journey old
Give a hand to one in need
Share the gift and plant the seed
Brethren all on this world of old – Company are we.
Guard the walls of this ancient ark, we’re company in company
Watch for lights in the falling dark – company…could be.
The world it all began a paradise for man
Each to help another, every man a brother
But now the world is old,
We must keep each other from the cold
Even when alone, keep the fire strong
‘til company are we…company are we.
Search for souls of the truest heart. Find the way in the cold and dark.
Hand in hand help a brother start. Company are we.
TAKE THE CARAVAN & GO
(©2003, Dudley-Brian Smith)
The wind is in the west; the voices of my kin
Say it’s time once more to shift,
Time to move along again.
Take the caravan and go, back to the open road.
Take the caravan and go, back with those my own.
Take the caravan and go, in the wind on the open road.
The songs I’ve known and love are sung around the fire.
I dance to lose control in the arms I so desire.
Many miles to travel, another road around the bend;
Always another song, for the songs are in the wind.
When I was young I felt so lost and old beyond my years.
But the road pulled me on and the wind it dried my tears.
NORTH BY NORTHEAST
(©1989, Dudley-Brian Smith )
North by northeast; Sailor, turn your ship home to me.
Seasons change and I reflect on things, somewhere I feel that I must go.
I see what you see & I hear everything, but the evening’s here & I must go.
Don’t go writing what you wish for me; don’t be caught up in philosophy;
Turn your gaze upon the western sea; throw your message to the sea.
There’s a bottle in the sea, and I message there for me.
Sailor, turn your ship north by northeast, come on home to me.
Come home to me.
Katie waits in the high west tower; the sky is black and falling down on the sea.
Women of the town gather on the rocks; all of them pray for what may not be.
Katie walks the farthest reaches, craning hard to see beyond the despair.
Lovers and husbands, brothers and sons, reached for in cries and prayers.
Sailor, come home. Come home to me! I am alone, robbed by the sea.
Katie watches every hour, days upon days and years upon years.
People of the town see her on the rocks, waiting for her love, fills the sea with tears.
Sailor, come home. Come home to me! I am alone, robbed by the sea.
Seasons change and I reflect on things – somewhere I feel that I must go;
To see what you see and hear everything, the time has come that I must go.
No more waiting on a wish for me; no more thinking of philosophies.
I turn my eyes upon the western sea – is there a message there for me?
There’s a bottle in the sea, and I message there for me.
Sailor, turn your ship north by northeast, come on home to me.
Come home to me.
LOVE IS ETERNAL
(©2003, Jan Smith)
Oh, I just wasn’t ready
For you to go through that final door
For we had started and never finished
A thousand conversations or more.
For Love, it is eternal; O, love, it never dies
And how could I ever be ready
For the tears and the silence you left behind in my life.
Yesterday I had something to tell you
And a letter in the mail for you to read
And a funny thing happened in your garden
And the sun set just like you love to see
O, I knew you long before I met you
In some secret corner of my heart
Now you’re gone but you haven’t left me
Like the smoke of a candle in the dark- still with me...
I’ve been told that there’s a rhyme and a reason
For everything under the sun
But I tell you there’s no time and there’s no season
For the end of a love like this one.
UNSPOKEN
(©1987, Dudley-Brian Smith)
The wind blows hard against my face.
The hours grow cold and the sky turns dark and grey.
I sit here alone...
In the morning, so hard to start the day;
All the longings are growing lines upon my face.
I’m left all alone....cold as a stone.
My heart turns to slate,
And love has all but faded away.
Without you to fill my day,
I’m as empty as clay
Dried and broken like words left unspoken.
The rain falls like tears on the day,
And the loneliness calls – it drives me insane,
Toward the unknown...cold and alone.
